Fabric GSM Selection Guide: 140 to 320 GSM for Sports Apparel Manufacturing

Fabric weight — measured in GSM (grams per square meter) — is the single most important spec when designing custom sports apparel. Pick too light and your jersey wears through mid-season. Pick too heavy and your athletes overheat.

Why GSM Matters in Sports Apparel

GSM determines breathability, durability, stretch recovery, and how well sublimation ink holds on the fabric. Different sports demand different weights, and different weights demand different finishing techniques.

The GSM Range by Sport

  • 140-160 GSM — Ultralight track singlets, marathon kits, summer training
  • 160-180 GSM — Standard soccer jerseys, basketball uniforms, cricket whites
  • 180-220 GSM — American football jerseys, baseball home/away, training wear
  • 220-260 GSM — Hockey practice jerseys, warm-up suits, heavy-duty training
  • 260-320 GSM — Ice hockey sweaters, wool-blend heritage wear, winter outerwear

How GSM Affects Sublimation

Fabric under 150 GSM takes sublimation ink beautifully — full-bleed designs hold with razor-sharp detail. Fabric above 220 GSM needs slower calender speeds and higher pressure to push ink into the weave, but delivers richer color saturation that survives more wash cycles.

Stretch Recovery and Abrasion

Higher GSM fabrics with spandex blends (4-way stretch) recover their shape better after repeated stretching — critical for American football and hockey jerseys that take impact. Lower GSM polyester interlock stretches more easily but may sag after heavy use.

Choosing the Right GSM for Your Order

  • Hot climates (Middle East, Australia) — lean toward 140-180 GSM
  • Cold climates (Canada, Northern Europe) — 220-320 GSM for outer layers
  • Contact sports — minimum 180 GSM with stretch recovery
  • Non-contact sports — 140-180 GSM for speed and breathability
  • Mixed-use teamwear — 180 GSM hits the sweet spot

“For a first B2B order, we usually recommend 180 GSM polyester interlock — it's the most versatile weight across jerseys and uniforms, prints well with sublimation, and holds up to sustained use.”
